Medinah Paintings and Prints

Medinah Country Club, in the western suburbs of Chicago, was founded in 1924 by members of the Shriners. Its domed clubhouse, built in a mixture of Byzantine, Moorish and other styles, is unlike any other in American golf. Tom Bendelow designed the club's courses, and Course No. 3 opened in 1928. It has been revised many times since, most recently in a major redesign by Ogilvy Clayton Cocking Mead completed in the early 2020s.

Course No. 3 is a long parkland course routed through old oaks and around Lake Kadijah. For most of its history its signature hole was the 13th, a long par 3 that carried an arm of the lake to a green ringed by three bunkers. The recent redesign replaced that hole with a new 13th that plays alongside the lake, so the hole as it was known through Medinah's great championships now survives in photographs and paintings.

Medinah No. 3 has hosted the U.S. Open three times, in 1949, 1975 and 1990. In 1990 Hale Irwin, then 45, holed a long birdie putt on the final green and ran a lap of celebration before winning a playoff. The course hosted the PGA Championship in 1999 and 2006, both won by Tiger Woods, and the 2012 Ryder Cup, when the European team came back from four points down on the final day. In September 2026 it hosts the Presidents Cup, with play from September 24 to 27.

The 13th Hole, Medinah holds a particular place in Linda Hartough's work. The USGA commissioned her in 1989 to paint the first of 25 U.S. Open course paintings, and the 13th at Medinah was the first painting completed, for the 1990 U.S. Open.
