Congressional Paintings and Prints

The Blue Course outside Washington, D.C., host of three U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship.

Congressional Country Club, in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C., opened in 1924. It was founded by members of Congress, and its early membership drew heavily on the capital's political and business leaders. Devereux Emmet designed the original course; Robert Trent Jones later reworked and extended it, and Rees Jones has renovated it since. The Blue Course is the championship course.

The Blue is a rolling parkland course with large greens, many guarded by water or deep bunkers, and it has been rearranged over the years as championships demanded. For the 2011 U.S. Open, the 10th was a par 3 played downhill over water, while the 17th, a par 4 with water beside the green, is among the holes remembered from the 1997 Open.

Congressional has hosted the U.S. Open three times. Ken Venturi won in 1964, playing the final 36 holes on a single day in severe heat. Ernie Els won in 1997. Rory McIlroy won in 2011 with what was then the lowest 72-hole score in U.S. Open history. The club also hosted the 1976 PGA Championship and, for several years, PGA Tour events including the Kemper Open.

Between those championships, Congressional hosted the PGA Tour's AT&T National in 2007 through 2009 and again in 2012 through 2014, and in 2022 it hosted the KPMG Women's PGA Championship.

Linda Hartough's Congressional paintings come from two of those U.S. Opens: the 17th from 1997 and the 10th from 2011.
