Pennsylvania has one of the deepest traditions in American golf, and its great courses cluster at opposite ends of the state.

Around Philadelphia, the tradition is one of architecture. In the early twentieth century a group of amateur golfers there studied the courses of Scotland and England and brought back ideas about strategy and natural design. Hugh Wilson, a member of Merion Golf Club, spent several months abroad before laying out Merion's East Course, which opened in 1912. It is small and short by championship standards, but its deep, rough-edged bunkers, fast greens and closing holes around an old stone quarry have tested players at five U.S. Opens; its flagsticks carry wicker baskets instead of flags. Nearby, in Newtown Square, Aronimink's course by Donald Ross, opened in 1928 and restored in 2018, uses rolling, open ground and tilted greens, and hosted the PGA Championship in 1962 and 2026.

Western Pennsylvania is steel country, and its golf reflects a harder landscape of hills and valleys. Oakmont Country Club, opened in 1903 above the Allegheny River northeast of Pittsburgh, was built from the start to be severe. Its open, treeless holes, its Church Pews bunker and its famously fast greens have made it the most frequent host of the U.S. Open, ten times through 2025. Farther east, in the Laurel Highlands near Ligonier, Laurel Valley Golf Club, opened in 1959, sits in a broad valley among wooded ridges. Arnold Palmer, who grew up nearby in Latrobe, was among its founders, and it hosted the 1965 PGA Championship and the 1975 Ryder Cup.
