Georgia & the Carolina Lowcountry: Golf Paintings and Prints

This region runs from the red clay hills of Augusta, Georgia, down to the tidal coast of Georgia and South Carolina, and it holds the largest share of Linda Hartough's collection.

Augusta National Golf Club is the center of it. Built on the grounds of a former plant nursery and opened in the early 1930s, the course is known for its steep terrain, its tall pines and the flowering trees and shrubs that give each hole its name. The Masters is played there every April, when the azaleas and dogwoods are often in bloom, and that image of spring color against deep green has become the image of the course.

The coast looks entirely different. The Lowcountry is flat land cut by tidal rivers, sounds and salt marsh, with live oaks draped in Spanish moss, palmettos and pines on the higher ground. Its golf courses are shaped by the water. At Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, Pete Dye's small greens sit under the oaks, and the 18th runs along Calibogue Sound toward the red-and-white lighthouse. Across the sound, on Daufuskie Island, Rees Jones's course at Haig Point is reached only by boat. Secession Golf Club, near Beaufort, sits on a peninsula in the marsh, where the tide changes the look of the course from one hour to the next. At Sea Island, on the Georgia coast, the Seaside Course plays across open, sandy ground beside St. Simons Sound.

What ties the coastal courses together is light and water: wide skies, the shifting color of the marsh grass, and wind off the ocean that plays a larger part than elevation. The collection covers Augusta's named holes and Amen Corner, the 18th at Harbour Town in several editions, and single holes at Sea Island, Secession and Haig Point.
