Augusta National Paintings and Prints

Augusta National Golf Club sits on the site of Fruitland, a nineteenth-century plant nursery in Augusta, Georgia. Bobby Jones, newly retired after his Grand Slam of 1930, founded the club with Clifford Roberts and chose Alister MacKenzie to design the course with him. Construction began in 1932, and the first Masters Tournament, then called the Augusta National Invitation, was played there in 1934. It is the only one of golf's four men's major championships held on the same course every year.

The nursery never quite left. Every hole is named for a tree or shrub that grows beside it, from Tea Olive at the first to Holly at the eighteenth, and the names read like a planting list: Flowering Crab Apple, Juniper, Yellow Jasmine, Camellia, White Dogwood, Golden Bell, Azalea, Firethorn, Redbud. The property falls steeply from the clubhouse toward Rae's Creek, and much of the course's drama comes from that elevation, which television tends to flatten.

The heart of the back nine is Amen Corner, the name the writer Herbert Warren Wind gave in 1958 to the stretch from the approach at the 11th, across the par-3 12th, to the tee shot at the 13th. Rae's Creek runs in front of the 12th green; the Hogan Bridge carries players across it to the green, and the Nelson Bridge crosses to the 13th tee. The 13th, a par 5 that bends left along a tributary of the creek, is framed by thousands of azaleas and is often the turning point of the Masters on Sunday.

No major championship course has been altered as often. Greens have been rebuilt, water hazards added and tees moved back, first by Perry Maxwell and Robert Trent Jones and later by Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio, so that the course has kept pace with the game while keeping MacKenzie and Jones's routing.

Augusta National is the largest group in Linda Hartough's catalog. Her paintings follow the named holes around the course, with Amen Corner and the flowering holes of the back nine at the center, along with the 18th and the clubhouse.
