Haig Point Paintings and Prints

Haig Point Club lies on the northern end of Daufuskie Island, South Carolina, across Calibogue Sound from Hilton Head Island. There is no bridge to Daufuskie, so members and guests arrive by ferry, and the crossing is part of the experience. International Paper developed the club in the 1980s and hired Rees Jones to design the golf course, which opened in 1986.

Jones's original routing had 20 holes, with two alternate holes set closer to the water, so the course could be played in more than one combination. The holes move between maritime forest of live oak and pine and open stretches along the marsh and the sound, where the wind comes into play. Jones returned in 2007 to restore the greens and lengthen the course.

The club takes its name from Haig Point, where the Haig Point Lighthouse stands. Built in 1873 as a range light to guide ships through the shifting shoals of Calibogue Sound, it served until the 1930s and was restored when the club was developed.

Daufuskie Island has a long history of its own, including a Gullah community whose roots go back generations. When International Paper developed Haig Point in the 1980s, it also moved the historic Strachan Mansion onto the property, where it remains part of the club.
