California & the Monterey Peninsula: Golf Paintings and Prints

California's championship golf is defined by the Pacific. On the Monterey Peninsula, south of San Francisco, rocky headlands, sandy coves and windswept Monterey cypress meet the ocean, and the courses built there use the coastline as their main hazard. The weather is mild but changeable, with marine fog in summer and wind off the water most afternoons.

Pebble Beach Golf Links, opened in 1919, is the best known of these courses and one of the most celebrated in the world. Its routing puts as many holes as possible on the cliffs above Carmel Bay, from the small 7th to the 18th along the seawall, and it has hosted the U.S. Open six times. A few miles away, Spyglass Hill, opened in 1966, begins in white sand dunes near the ocean and then climbs into the pine forest, with holes named for places and characters in Treasure Island.

The collection also includes two California courses away from the peninsula. In San Francisco, the Olympic Club's Lake Course is cut through dense stands of cypress, pine and eucalyptus planted on old sand dunes near Lake Merced, where fog and cool ocean air are part of the character; it has hosted five U.S. Opens. In San Diego, the city-owned Torrey Pines South Course sits on sandstone bluffs above the Pacific in La Jolla, named for the rare pine that grows wild along that coast. It hosted the U.S. Open in 2008 and 2021.

Together, these courses show California golf at its most varied: ocean cliffs, dunes, forest and parkland within a single state.
