Pebble Beach Paintings and Prints

Pebble Beach Golf Links opened on February 22, 1919, on the edge of Carmel Bay on California's Monterey Peninsula. Samuel F.B. Morse, who led Del Monte Properties, gave the design to two amateur golfers, Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, and their figure-eight routing is still essentially the one played today. The course was built to put as many holes as possible on the cliffs, and it succeeds: much of the round runs along the water.
The stretch from the 6th through the 10th is the most celebrated. The 7th is a short par 3 that drops toward the ocean, with the green nearly surrounded by sand and surf. The 8th asks for an approach across a chasm in the cliffs, and the 9th and 10th follow the edge of the bay. The round closes the same way: the par-3 17th plays toward the water, and the 18th, a par 5, curves along the seawall with Carmel Bay down its entire left side.
Pebble Beach has hosted six U.S. Opens, in 1972, 1982, 1992, 2000, 2010 and 2019, as well as the 1977 PGA Championship and the 2023 U.S. Women's Open, the first time that championship was played there. Jack Nicklaus won the 1972 Open after striking the flagstick at the 17th with a 1-iron; Tom Watson chipped in at the same hole to win in 1982; and Tiger Woods won in 2000 by 15 strokes. The course has also hosted U.S. Amateurs in 1929, 1947, 1961, 1999 and 2018, and it anchors the annual AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The USGA has scheduled the U.S. Open to return in 2027.
Pebble Beach is the second-largest group in Linda Hartough's catalog, after Augusta National. Her work covers the cliff holes, the 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th, and the 17th and 18th, including prints tied to the 2010 U.S. Open.
