Torrey Pines Paintings and Prints

Torrey Pines Golf Course sits on sandstone bluffs above the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, just north of downtown San Diego. It is owned by the City of San Diego and open to the public, and it takes its name from the Torrey pine, a rare tree that grows wild only along this stretch of coast and on one of the Channel Islands. William F. Bell designed the two courses, North and South, which opened in 1957. Rees Jones redesigned the South in 2001, lengthening it and reshaping greens and bunkers, and renovated it again in 2019.

Several holes on the South run along the edge of the canyons that drop to the beach, and the ocean is in view for much of the round. The 3rd is a downhill par 3 toward the Pacific, played from a high tee to a green framed by bunkers, with the coastline below.

The South Course has hosted the U.S. Open twice. In 2008 Tiger Woods won in a Monday playoff against Rocco Mediate while playing on a fractured leg, a championship that brought a municipal course to a national audience. In 2021 Jon Rahm won with birdies on the last two holes. Torrey Pines has also been a regular PGA Tour venue since 1968.

Linda Hartough has painted the 3rd on the South Course, including an edition from the 2008 U.S. Open.
