Oakmont Paintings and Prints
The Church Pews and some of golf's fastest greens, in the hills above Pittsburgh.
Oakmont Country Club, in the hills northeast of Pittsburgh, opened in 1903. It was the work of Henry C. Fownes, a steel industrialist, and his son William, and it is the only course Henry Fownes ever designed. From the start the Fowneses wanted a severe test, and Oakmont has kept that reputation for more than a century.
The course is open and treeless for long stretches, the result of a tree-removal program that returned it to the look of its early years. Its greens are fast and tilted, and they have become the measure against which other championship greens are judged; the Stimpmeter, the device used to measure green speed, was devised by Edward Stimpson after he watched the 1935 U.S. Open at Oakmont. Between the 3rd and 4th holes lies the Church Pews, a long bunker divided by a series of grass ridges. The Pennsylvania Turnpike runs through the property, and the course is split across it. Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner restored the course in 2023.
Oakmont has hosted the U.S. Open ten times, more than any other course: in 1927, 1935, 1953, 1962, 1973, 1983, 1994, 2007, 2016 and 2025. It has also hosted three PGA Championships, in 1922, 1951 and 1978, the U.S. Women's Open in 1992 and 2010, and several U.S. Amateurs. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

The approach shot is no less daunting, as the green is elevated and fiercely guarded by Oakmont’s signature bunkers, requiring pinpoint accuracy to avoid trouble, testing every aspect of a golfer’s game.
