Winged Foot Paintings and Prints
A.W. Tillinghast's West Course in Westchester County, host of six U.S. Opens.
Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, was founded in 1921 by members of the New York Athletic Club, whose winged-foot emblem gave the club its name. A.W. Tillinghast designed both of its courses, the West and the East, and they opened in 1923. Tillinghast built them on rolling, rocky Westchester ground, and the West has been the championship course ever since.
The West is known less for a single signature hole than for its consistency. Its greens are deeply contoured and closely guarded by bunkers, and the difficulty comes from approach shots into them from long grass rather than from water or forced carries. Gil Hanse restored the greens and bunkers in 2018. The 10th, a par 3 played to a green framed by bunkers with the clubhouse behind, is among the course's best-known holes.
Winged Foot has hosted the U.S. Open six times: in 1929, when Bobby Jones won in a playoff; in 1959; in 1974, the championship still called the Massacre at Winged Foot for its high scores; in 1984; in 2006, when Geoff Ogilvy won after Phil Mickelson's double bogey at the last; and in 2020. It also hosted the 1997 PGA Championship, and the USGA has chosen it for the 2028 U.S. Open.
