Turnberry Paintings and Prints

Turnberry lies on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland, looking out across the Firth of Clyde to the granite dome of Ailsa Craig and, on a clear day, to Arran and the Mull of Kintyre. Willie Fernie laid out the first links here in 1901, and the Ailsa course that grew from it has twice been turned into an airfield, in both world wars. After the second, Philip Mackenzie Ross rebuilt it, and it reopened in 1951. Mackenzie & Ebert revised it again in 2016.

The middle of the course is its most dramatic stretch. From around the 8th, the holes run along low cliffs past the Turnberry lighthouse and the scant ruins of a castle associated with Robert the Bruce, which gives the 9th its name, Bruce's Castle. The 10th, Dinna Fouter, a Scots phrase meaning "don't meddle," follows the shore with Ailsa Craig offshore. Above the 11th and 12th stands a memorial to the airmen who trained at Turnberry during the First World War.

Turnberry has hosted The Open four times, in 1977, 1986, 1994 and 2009. The first is remembered as the Duel in the Sun, when Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus played the final two rounds together and Watson won by a stroke. In 2009 Watson, at 59, came within a putt of winning again before losing a playoff to Stewart Cink.
