Muirfield Paintings and Prints

Muirfield, at Gullane on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth, east of Edinburgh, is the home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The club traces its history to 1744, when it drew up thirteen rules for a competition at Leith, the oldest known written rules of golf. After playing at Leith and then Musselburgh, the club moved to Muirfield in 1891, where Old Tom Morris laid out the first course.

The present course is largely Harry Colt's redesign of 1925, later refined by Tom Simpson and Martin Hawtree. Colt arranged it in two loops: the front nine runs clockwise around the edge of the property and the back nine counterclockwise inside it, so the wind comes from a different direction on almost every hole. Muirfield is considered one of the fairest links in the game, with few blind shots and a clear view of most hazards, but its bunkers are deep and steep-faced. The 18th finishes in front of the clubhouse.

Muirfield has hosted The Open 16 times, from 1892, the first Open played over 72 holes, to 2013. Nick Faldo won there twice, in 1987 and 1992. The club has also hosted the 1973 Ryder Cup, the Walker Cup, the Curtis Cup, the Amateur Championship and, in 2022, the Women's Open.
