Royal Troon Paintings and Prints

Royal Troon Golf Club was founded in 1878 on the Ayrshire coast in the southwest of Scotland, looking across the Firth of Clyde to the island of Arran and the rock of Ailsa Craig. The Old Course was shaped by Willie Fernie, the club's professional and the 1883 Open champion, and later revised by James Braid before the club hosted its first Open in 1923.

The course runs out along the shore and back inland, so the prevailing wind usually helps on the way out and punishes on the way home. The inward nine is widely considered among the hardest in championship golf. The 11th, known as the Railway, runs beside the train line.

Troon's best-known hole is also one of the shortest in major championship golf. The 8th, the Postage Stamp, is a par 3 played across a gully to a narrow green cut into a dune and ringed with deep bunkers, one of them called the Coffin. Gene Sarazen, then 71, made a hole-in-one there at the 1973 Open. The 17th, Rabbit, is a longer par 3, and the round finishes at the 18th, Craigend, in front of the clubhouse.

Royal Troon has hosted The Open ten times: 1923, 1950, 1962, 1973, 1982, 1989, 1997, 2004, 2016 and 2024. Arthur Havers won the first by holing a bunker shot at the last.
