Southern Hills Paintings and Prints
Perry Maxwell's course in Tulsa, host of three U.S. Opens and five PGA Championships.
Southern Hills Country Club, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, opened in 1936, in the middle of the Depression. The oilman Waite Phillips donated the land, and Perry Maxwell, an Oklahoman best known for his greens, designed the course. Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner restored it in 2018 and 2019, bringing back the rough-edged bunkers and green shapes that Maxwell had built.
The course winds over rolling ground with a creek running through it, and its bentgrass greens are smaller and more contoured than they appear. Oklahoma summers are hot and windy, and the championships held here have often been played in heat. The 12th, a par 4 that turns toward a well-bunkered green, is among the course's best-known holes.
Southern Hills has hosted eight men's major championships. It has staged the U.S. Open three times, in 1958, 1977 and 2001; Retief Goosen won the 2001 championship in a Monday playoff against Mark Brooks. It has hosted the PGA Championship five times, in 1970, 1982, 1994, 2007 and 2022, when Justin Thomas won.
Several of its championships are remembered for their drama. Hubert Green won the 1977 U.S. Open after being told during the final round of a death threat against him and choosing to play on. Tiger Woods won the 2007 PGA Championship there in August heat.
