The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, was founded in 1882 and was one of the five clubs that formed the United States Golf Association in 1894. It is simply called The Country Club, and it has played a larger part in the history of American golf than its modest name suggests.
The championship course is a composite, drawn from the club's three nines, the Clyde, the Squirrel and the Primrose, and its routing has changed from one championship to the next. The land is rolling New England ground, and outcrops of Roxbury puddingstone, a local rock, break through the fairways. The best known of them fronts the hole called Himalayas, where the tee shot must clear a ridge of rock. Greens are small and many are raised. Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner renovated the course before the 2022 U.S. Open.
The 1913 U.S. Open at The Country Club is often described as the moment golf took hold in the United States. Francis Ouimet, a 20-year-old amateur who had grown up across the street, tied the English professionals Harry Vardon and Ted Ray and beat them in a playoff, with 10-year-old Eddie Lowery carrying his bag. The club hosted the U.S. Open again in 1963, 1988 and 2022, along with many U.S. Amateurs and the Walker Cup in 1932 and 1973. In 1999 it hosted the Ryder Cup, when the American team came back from four points down on the final day and Justin Leonard holed a long putt on the 17th green.
