Royal St George's Paintings and Prints

Royal St George's Golf Club was founded in 1887 at Sandwich, in Kent, in the southeast corner of England. Laidlaw Purves, a Scottish doctor who had been looking for land to rival the Scottish links, found it here, among huge dunes near the town. Only seven years later, in 1894, the club hosted the first Open Championship played outside Scotland, which J.H. Taylor won.

The course is known for its scale and its unpredictability. The dunes are among the largest on any championship links, and the fairways ripple and heave, sending shots that land in the same spot in different directions. The 4th hole carries one of the tallest bunkers in championship golf, set into the face of a dune. Views reach across Pegwell Bay toward the English Channel, and the wind is a constant factor. The course was revised by Martin Ebert in 2016.

Royal St George's has hosted The Open 15 times, more than any other course in England, in 1894, 1899, 1904, 1911, 1922, 1928, 1934, 1938, 1949, 1981, 1985, 1993, 2003, 2011 and 2021. It has also hosted the Walker Cup.

Its Open champions span more than a century, from J.H. Taylor in 1894 and Walter Hagen in 1922 and 1928 to Greg Norman in 1993, Ben Curtis in 2003, Darren Clarke in 2011 and Collin Morikawa in 2021.
