Royal County Down Golf Club was founded in 1889 in Newcastle, in County Down, Northern Ireland, where the Mountains of Mourne come down to the sea. Old Tom Morris was engaged to lay out the first course, and it was later revised by others, among them Harry Vardon and Harry Colt. The club received its royal title in 1908.
Few courses have a setting to match it. The links run through high dunes along Dundrum Bay, with the dome of Slieve Donard, the highest of the Mournes, rising behind the town. The course is known for its blind tee shots over dunes, its bunkers edged with shaggy lips of marram and heather, and its gorse, which turns the dunes gold in spring. Keeping the ball in play matters more than length, and a player who strays from the fairway can lose sight of the hole altogether.
The 9th is its most photographed hole. The tee shot is played blind over a high ridge to a fairway far below, and from the top of the dune the player sees the whole hole, the town of Newcastle and Slieve Donard at once.
Royal County Down has hosted the Walker Cup in 2007, the Irish Open in 2015, the Curtis Cup, the Amateur Championship and the Senior Open, among other events.
